The new Navarra Intermodal Terminal (TIN), in Noáin, was inaugurated on 21 July following a €10 million investment that triples the capacity of the region’s dry port. The President of Navarre, María Chivite Navascués, took part in the event and described the day as “a strategically key day for Navarre”, as it represents “opportunities for businesses in terms of both their competitiveness and their internationalisation plans, reduction of logistics costs and decarbonisation”.
A commitment to rail and sustainable mobility
The President highlighted that the expansion will help boost freight transport by rail, a path she described as “a commitment to sustainable mobility, territorial cohesion” and “a new outlook for logistics that opens up a framework of possibilities, not only in the present but also for the future”. In this regard, Chivite set the target of reaching 10% of freight transported by rail by 2030, a goal shared with the Spanish Government through its Freight Plan.
The President also highlighted the collaboration between public administrations, rail operators, shippers and businesses to continue attracting investment and improving infrastructure, capacity and competitiveness, describing the Port of Barcelona as “a major benchmark for Navarrese businesses”. Chivite also announced that the Government of Navarre is already working on a new project: a second terminal in the Ribera region that will add capacity, competitiveness and territorial cohesion for the region and its businesses.
European funding for Navarre’s industrial fabric
The Government’s delegate in Navarre, Alicia Echeverría, also spoke at the event, recalling that the terminal’s expansion was financed through European funds from the Recovery Plan, which is helping to strengthen Navarre’s industrial fabric. Echeverría cited examples of this momentum, including the electrification of Volkswagen, the establishment of Mobis and the grant awarded to Hithium for its plant in Navarre, and described the new terminal as “an added value, a further attraction” for the region’s industrial ecosystem.
Meanwhile, the director of the Navarra Intermodal Terminal and of Synergy, Pablo García, noted that the expansion “represents a firm commitment to Navarre for the coming decades” and will help continue supporting the growth of businesses in the region in international markets.
From a weekly connection to five services with Barcelona
Brought into service in 2013, the Noáin Intermodal Terminal has gone from a single weekly rail connection to five regular services with the Port of Barcelona, operated mainly by Synergy, part of the Hutchison Ports group. In September 2024, Hutchison Ports BEST — the main container operator at the Port of Barcelona — was awarded the concession for the terminal by ADIF for the next fifteen years, committing to this investment of around €10 million, financed through the European Commission’s Next Generation funds.
The works tripled the site’s surface area, to 42,000 square metres, and included the construction of two new 550-metre tracks and an expanded esplanade for rail operations and container storage.
The inauguration was also attended by the Regional Minister for Territorial Cohesion, Óscar Chivite; the Director General for Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Berta Miranda; ADIF’s Director General for Passengers and Business Development, Elena González; the Mayor of Valle de Elorz, Mikel Navarro; the President of the Navarre Business Confederation, Manuel Piquer; the Atlantic Corridor Commissioner, José Antonio Sebastián; the President of the Port of Barcelona, José Alberto Carbonell, and executives from Hutchison Ports BEST and Synergy.
