Navarra funds international R&D projects in personalised medicine

MEDICINA PERSONALIZADA

The call, open until 18 February, is part of the 2025 EP PerMed grants, financed by the Government of Navarra’s own funds and the European Union’s Horizon programme. Specifically, the regional government, through the Department of Industry and Ecological and Digital Business Transition, participates as a funding partner, so that, annually, the beneficiary entities may receive funding of up to 200,000 euros to carry out R&D projects in personalised medicine over a maximum of 3 years.

Through this initiative, the regional authorities aim to facilitate the installation in the region of international entities to identify and validate markers or pharmacogenomic signatures that allow the results of a treatment to be monitored. It also seeks to encourage and enable interdisciplinary collaborations combining pre-clinical and clinical research in transnational projects.

In addition, the call seeks to encourage cross-sectoral collaborations, including the private sector, industry, as well as regulatory agencies and patient organisations. To this end, consortia are required to be trans-national. This implies that each consortium must involve at least three partners from three different EU Member States or associated countries whose funding organisations are participating in the call.

There are three categories in which applicants belonging to one entity can submit joint research proposals. The first is academic, which includes research teams working in universities or other higher education institutions. The second is the clinical or public health sector, which seeks to encourage the participation of clinicians in research teams. Finally, there is the category dedicated to the private sector, both for-profit entities (SMEs and large companies) and non-profit entities (foundations, associations or non-governmental organisations, etc.).

The call will be implemented in two phases, i.e. a pre-proposal phase and a full proposal phase. All interested parties can submit a pre-proposal project application via the call’s website. From there, around 20 May, those who have been pre-approved will be announced, who in turn must submit a full proposal by 20 June.

A REFERENCIAL BIOMEDICAL INDUSTRY
At present, the biomedical sector in Navarre employs 31,508 people in the Autonomous Community. Most of them work in healthcare services (27,981), although we should also highlight the 2,465 jobs linked to the health industry and the 1,065 researchers. Precisely, in one of our latest reports we detailed the level of growth as well as the growing strength that this sector is achieving in its efforts to become a benchmark at European level. This is detailed in this link.
