Navarra is continuing to strengthen its commitment to advanced biotechnology and synthetic biology as strategic fields for driving innovation, knowledge transfer and science-based economic growth.
The Government of Navarra, through the IRIS Navarra Digital Innovation Hub and in collaboration with ADItech, has taken a further step in the development of its Synthetic Biology and Biotechnology Master Plan by bringing together stakeholders from the Navarra R&D&I System (SINAI). The aim is to define a shared strategy that will enhance the region’s position in one of the scientific fields with the greatest potential for economic and social transformation.
This initiative forms part of Navarra’s broader commitment to promoting high value-added sectors linked to health, food, sustainability, energy and industry, areas in which synthetic biology offers significant technological and business opportunities.
A collaborative ecosystem to drive innovation
The strategy is being developed through a participatory process involving technology centres, universities, research organisations and institutional stakeholders from Navarra’s innovation ecosystem.
During a recent working session held at the IRIS Hub, participants reviewed scientific capabilities, infrastructure, research lines and technology transfer mechanisms in order to identify Navarra’s strengths and growth opportunities in this emerging field.
As highlighted by the Regional Minister for Universities, Innovation and Digital Transformation, Juan Luis García, synthetic biology and biotechnology represent a key opportunity to consolidate an economic model based on knowledge, collaboration and innovation.
Strengthening Navarra’s attractiveness for scientific and industrial projects
The strategy seeks to create a favourable environment for the development of new technologies, the creation of innovative companies and the attraction of investment in knowledge-intensive activities.
Navarra benefits from a well-established R&D&I ecosystem, supported by research centres, universities, technological infrastructures and specialised companies working in fields such as life sciences, biotechnology, bioinformatics and personalised medicine. This collaborative environment provides a strong foundation for generating new economic opportunities and positioning the region as a European leader in scientific and technological innovation.
