The incorporation of the Meseta Norte transverse hydro-product section, promoted by Enagás, and its link to the European Commission’s Projects of Common Interest (PCI) reinforce the region’s position in this industrial sector. This latest initiative, on the other hand, joins the forthcoming implementation of other strategic projects in the region as part of an ambitious roadmap.
Enagás has announced the incorporation of the section of the North Meseta transverse hydro-product, which will connect Zamora with Navarre, into Spain’s hydrogen backbone network. The announcement, made by its CEO, Arturo Gonzalo, during Enagás’ Third Hydrogen Day, reinforces Navarra’s strategic position in this key infrastructure.
This new section will allow connection with the axis that integrates the routes of the Cantabrian Coast, Ebro Valley and Levante, totalling some 1,500 km in all. Moreover, this corridor, which crosses Navarre, is already part of the European Commission’s Projects of Common Interest (PCI), a designation that is also expected for the new strategic sections presented by Enagás, with the aim of accessing European funding.
The region is thus consolidating its position as a key player in the development of green hydrogen in Spain, promoting strategic initiatives that reinforce its role in the national backbone network of this energy vector. For example, Navarra’s Green Hydrogen Agenda sets a target of 150 MW of production capacity by 2030, with the aim of replacing 5% of industrial consumption of natural gas in the region.
This commitment translates into large-scale projects, such as the one promoted by Acciona Energía and Plug Power in Sangüesa, where a 25 MW electrolyser will be installed to produce green hydrogen for industrial and mobility applications. Furthermore, Navarra presented its progress at the European Green Hydrogen Week in Brussels, highlighting initiatives such as the production plant in the Ciudad Agroalimentaria de Tudela and the manufacture of electrolysers by Nordex in Barásoain.
Navarra’s leadership in this field therefore reflects its firm commitment to decarbonisation and the transition towards a more sustainable economy, positioning itself as a benchmark in the production and use of green hydrogen at national level.
THE RENEWABLE ECOSYSTEM OF NAVARRA
Navarre is a pioneer and European benchmark in the production of renewable energies, with a historic technological and industrial commitment that has driven the development of new global standards in wind energy.
This sector is the third most important in the region, after the automotive and agri-food industries, and has a solid industrial network made up of more than 110 companies, which represent 10% of industrial employment and generate a turnover of 4,500 million euros, equivalent to 5% of the region’s GDP. It is also the second largest export sector in Navarre, mainly in the manufacture of wind turbines and their components.
The existing dense industrial fabric covers all links in the value chain, including a large renewable energy operator, Acciona Energía, and two large OEMs: Siemens Gamesa and Nordex-Acciona Windpower. There is also a group of SMEs that provide high added value in specific components such as blades, control systems, bearings and gearboxes.
