Multinational Viru plans €20 million investment in its Marcilla factory

Viru

Viru, a multinational specialised in the production and export of processed foods — particularly fruit and vegetables — and a supplier of private label brands internationally, is planning to expand its facilities and acquire new machinery at its Marcilla plant. This investment will allow Viru to increase its production capacity and efficiency, as well as improve its competitiveness in the international market.

Details of the investment project were revealed during a visit by Mikel Irujo, the Regional Minister for Industry, Ecological Transition and Digital Business of the Government of Navarre. Also present at the meeting were Iñigo Arruti, Director General for Business Development, and Uxue Itoiz, Managing Director of the public agency CEIN.

Irujo highlighted Viru’s commitment to the Navarre agri-food industry: “This investment demonstrates how the agri-food sector in Navarre continues to grow with a forward-looking vision. Viru is a prime example of a company committed to innovation, sustainability and local integration. Projects like this are key to the economic development of the Ribera region and to strengthening our leadership in the agri-food sector,” he said.

Alessio Nicolini, Director of the Marcilla plant, thanked the public institutions for their support and outlined the objectives of the investment: “We are proud to continue growing in Navarre, a region with a strong and well-established agri-food ecosystem. This expansion will allow us to diversify our products, improve processes and continue to generate high-quality employment. We are committed to excellence in plant-based transformation and to making our Marcilla site a European benchmark.”

The importance of the Agri-Food Sector

Navarre-based companies cover the entire agri-food value chain — from primary production to industrial processing. The region is home to Spain’s two largest frozen vegetable producers (Ultracongelados Virto and Congelados de Navarra), the largest grain cooperative group (Grupo AN), and Viscofan, the global leader in the manufacture and marketing of casings for food products, with sales in over 100 countries worldwide. It also hosts Florette, Spain’s top brand for fresh, ready-to-eat salads and vegetables, alongside other global giants such as General Mills, Gelagri, Mondelez, and Agrozumos.
