The American company, which belongs to the Chinese group Yuguan, consolidated as the largest producer and distributor of mushroom seeds in the world, adds the facilities of Gurelan Mycelium to the nineteen sites it currently has, becoming the largest producer of mushroom seeds in Spain.
Sylvan Inc, the world’s largest producer and distributor of mushroom seeds, has acquired the mushroom business of Gurelan Mycelium, located in Huarte, west of Pamplona. This operation, which is part of the multinational’s global growth strategy in fungal solutions, means adding the largest mushroom seed producer in Spain to its portfolio.
According to the multinational, this new agreement “allows the two companies to further enhance their presence and service to the Spanish mushroom industry through the combination of their operations”. In this sense, Spain is one of the “largest mushroom producing countries” in Europe and Gurelan, founded in 1963 as a cooperative society, “the largest mushroom seed producer” in Spain. “Now, by joining forces with Gurelan, we will be able to further accelerate our ambition to grow in this market,” the company said.
In fact, Gurelan has “a long-standing and loyal customer base”, both in northern Spain and in Castilla-La Mancha, the main mushroom-growing areas in the country. According to the multinational, the Navarre-based company will continue to offer its products in the Spanish market under its own brand name.
Founded in 1946, Sylvan has facilities in nineteen locations serving 65 countries on five continents. In 2018, it was acquired by the Yuguan Group, which specializes in the cultivation, processing and sale of commercial mushrooms. This multinational now owns the largest modern farm in China.
