Nordex Electrolyzers and the Spanish Hydrogen Association (AeH2) marked World Hydrogen Day on 8 October at the company’s facilities in Lumbier. The event championed Spain’s capacity to design and manufacture its own renewable hydrogen technology, showcasing the NX2500 electrolyser, developed entirely in Navarra.
The event brought together representatives from government, industry and research to discuss Spain’s hydrogen value chain and the strategic role of equipment manufacturing.
NX2500: designed, manufactured and assembled in Navarra
The NX2500 is a 2.5 MW pressurised alkaline electrolyser. According to the company, it is the first megawatt-scale unit of its kind to be designed, manufactured and assembled entirely in Spain. It was launched in 2025, following validation with 50 kW and 500 kW prototypes, and the company is already developing 5 MW and 10 MW units.
Nordex Electrolyzers was founded in 2022 as a joint venture between Sodena, the Government of Navarra’s public business development company, and Nordex Group. It has sites in Navarra and Puertollano.
Domestic manufacturing, key to competitiveness
Luis Solla, Managing Director of Nordex Electrolyzers, argued that domestic manufacturing capacity is essential for renewable hydrogen to be competitive. “Manufacturing a megawatt-scale electrolyser in Spain is not a symbolic gesture,” he said. According to Solla, producing in Spain shortens delivery times, gives control over the supply chain, and keeps the specialist knowledge and jobs linked to this technology in the country.
Javier Brey, President of AeH2, stressed that “the sector is ready and has the companies, knowledge and professionals to compete” internationally. He also warned that barriers remain in access to energy, infrastructure and demand development. According to AeH2’s Project Census, there are close to 400 hydrogen initiatives in Spain, more than 100 of them in R&D.
A regional ecosystem for green hydrogen
Garbiñe Basterra, Director General for Energy and Digital Transition, Business R&D&I and Entrepreneurship at the Government of Navarra, closed the event. She highlighted the region’s technological, industrial and research capabilities for driving innovative green hydrogen projects. She pointed to the work of CENER and of companies such as Nordex Electrolyzers, Statkraft and Enhol, and noted that Sodena has supported the development of the NX2500 from the outset.
Renewable hydrogen is emerging as an alternative for decarbonising hard-to-electrify sectors such as refining, petrochemicals, steel, fertilisers and heavy transport.
