Negotiations between Chinese company Hithium and BSH for a new battery plant at the former Esquíroz facility are progressing steadily. The project, announced last March by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, involves an investment of over €400 million and the creation of up to 745 jobs in its first phase.
A strategic investment for the industrial sector
The project is structured through a joint venture in which Hithium would hold a 66.6% stake, with the Government of Navarra, through Sodena, holding the remaining 33.3%. Hithium would contribute €100 million in capital, while Sodena could invest up to €50 million. Production is scheduled to begin in 2027, with a potential second phase adding a further 300 jobs.
Talks in an advanced stage
According to sources, negotiating teams remain in constant contact, with talks progressing favourably and the aim of closing a deal in the coming weeks. In parallel, the Cendea de Galar Council has approved an initial amendment to the Special Urban Action Plan (PEAU) to expand permitted uses at the former BSH site, enabling renewable energy and automotive-related projects.
Strengthening Navarra’s industrial fabric
Hithium has also stepped up ties with Navarrese companies such as Gurpea Group, Luartechnology and NR Electrónica, aiming to integrate local suppliers into its supply chain — reinforcing the project’s impact on the region’s industrial ecosystem.
