Vysium Health: Navarra commits to cutting-edge technology to enhance post-stroke rehabilitation

Vysium Health

Navarra is strengthening its commitment to innovation in healthcare: the Navarrese consortium led by Ysium Medical has launched Vysium Health, an R&D project classified as “strategic” by the regional Government and designed to transform neurological rehabilitation for patients who have suffered a stroke.

A major public health challenge

Stroke — a cerebrovascular accident — is one of the leading causes of disability and mortality in Spain; in Navarra, it ranks among the top causes of death. Among those who survive, a high percentage present motor, cognitive or hemispatial neglect sequelae, conditions that require intensive, personalised and sustained rehabilitation strategies.

What does Vysium Health propose?

To address this challenge, Vysium Health has developed a pioneering multisensory medical device that combines Mixed Reality (MR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The aim is to create immersive therapeutic environments capable of adapting in real time to each patient’s progress.

This approach will not only improve the detection of brain damage — such as hemispatial neglect, which is particularly difficult to diagnose today — but will also enable more personalised, precise and effective treatments.

As Ysium Medical’s CEO, Zuriñe Aguirre Larraza, explains:
“Vysium Health is an exciting technological challenge. We want to develop a tool capable of better identifying what often goes unnoticed today, and adapting therapies to each patient and their evolution.”

A Navarrese consortium with extensive expertise

The project is supported by a consortium of eight leading entities in health, technology and biomedicine in Navarra: Ysium Medical; the AI and health-software firm Data Value Management; the advanced optometry company Zamarripa Ópticos – Juandahu; the Foundation for Applied Medical Research (FIMA/CIMA); the University of Navarra; the Public University of Navarra (UPNA); the Navarra Brain Injury Association (ADACEN); and the Navarra Health Cluster (NHC).

The total project budget amounts to €1,319,898.01, funded by the Government of Navarra and co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the ERDF Operational Programme 2021–2027. Development will continue until 2027.

Impact expected beyond healthcare

The project’s promoters believe that Vysium Health will not only mark a milestone in neurological rehabilitation but will also help position Navarra as a hub for digital health and medical technology innovation.

The initiative is expected to foster the creation of highly skilled jobs, attract investment in health technologies, and strengthen the region’s R&D ecosystem in biomedicine and neurorehabilitation.

In summary

Vysium Health represents an ambitious public-private collaboration aimed at bringing cutting-edge technology into clinical practice — a development with the potential to transform the lives of many people affected by stroke. With this project, Navarra positions itself at the forefront of healthcare innovation, combining science, technology and a firm commitment to the well-being and recovery of its citizens.
