Navarra continues to strengthen its commitment to energy innovation and electrical grid independence. Within this framework, two strategic renewable energy storage projects are being developed in the Pamplona metropolitan area, near the substations of Cordovilla and Orkoien. The total planned investment exceeds €53 million for the creation of battery-based energy storage centres.
The projects involve the construction of eight battery groups connected to one another and to the new collector/step-up substation in Orkoien, reaching a power output of 38 MW and a storage capacity of 150 MW. The renewable energy storage facilities are located in industrial estates and are being developed by Soner and the Navarre-based company Ríos Renovables.
A new milestone for Navarra as a platform for renewable energy investment
These developments position Navarra as a highly attractive location for investors in the field of energy storage technologies:
- Strategic location: both Cordovilla and Orkoien are situated close to key electrical grid infrastructures, reducing evacuation costs and facilitating the integration of large volumes of renewable energy.
- Significant capacity: the projected 150 MW of storage represents a substantial commitment in a region already experiencing strong activity in battery projects.
- Supportive regulatory framework: the model reflects the growing need for storage solutions to manage variable renewable energy networks.
- Driving new jobs and industrial value chains: the implementation of these projects will generate activity in construction, maintenance and operation, while consolidating Navarra as a hub for cutting-edge technologies in the energy transition.
The renewable energy ecosystem of Navarra
Navarra is a pioneer and European reference in renewable energy generation, backed by a long-standing technological and industrial commitment that has driven the development of new global standards, particularly in wind energy.
The renewable sector is the third most important industry in the region—after automotive and agri-food—and comprises a robust industrial network of more than 110 companies, representing around 10% of industrial employment and generating turnover close to €4.5 billion, equivalent to approximately 5% of regional GDP. It is also Navarra’s second-largest exporting sector, primarily due to the production of wind turbines and their components.
The region’s dense industrial fabric covers virtually all links of the value chain, including a major renewable energy operator, Acciona Energía, and two large OEMs—Siemens Gamesa and Nordex-Acciona Windpower—along with a network of SMEs providing high added-value components such as blades, control systems, bearings and gearboxes. The new battery storage projects in Cordovilla and Orkoien are built upon this advanced ecosystem and reinforce the position of the region as a key location for the development of innovative solutions linked to the energy transition.
