The European Hydrogen Week knows the “enormous possibilities” of Navarra in Green Hydrogen

Two projects related to green hydrogen are already underway in the Autonomous Community of Navarra. The first one is led by Acciona Plug and foresees the construction of a 25 MW electrolyzer that will be able to produce a total of 3,880 tons of green hydrogen per year. For this purpose, a total associated investment of 87 million euros is foreseen. Secondly, Nordex Electrolyzers is carrying out an important project of common European interest (IPCEI) consisting of the development of electrolyzers with its own technology (Alkaline). This implementation will count on an investment of 70 million euros accumulated in 8 years and will create 150 direct jobs. “Green hydrogen will not only become a source for our industry to decarbonize, but will also bring value to our community,” said Mikel Irujo, Minister of Industry and Ecological and Digital Business Transition.

A Navarra delegation made up of half a dozen companies and technology centers participated in the latest edition of the ‘European Hydrogen Week’ held in Brussels. This representation, accompanied by the Minister Irujo, showed the “enormous possibilities” that the region is developing in Green Hydrogen. In this sense, “Navarra is one of the European regions with the greatest potential for the development of this type of technology”, insisted Mikel Irujo.

European Hydrogen Week, organized by the European Union’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation, is currently one of the biggest events in the sector. Proof of this is that in its last edition it attracted the interest of more than 8,000 professional visitors from all over the world.

In addition, during the event, various high-level talks were held to analyze the different regulatory frameworks related to renewable energies, as well as how to address the challenges of decarbonization and improve the EU’s competitiveness on a global scale. In addition, several networking events were held between companies across the value chain.

THE RENEWABLE ECOSYSTEM OF NAVARRA

Navarre is a pioneer and European benchmark in the production of renewable energies, with a historic technological and industrial commitment that has driven the development of new global standards in wind energy.

This sector is the third most important in the region, after the automotive and agri-food industries, and has a solid industrial network made up of more than 110 companies, which represent 10% of industrial employment and generate a turnover of 4,500 million euros, equivalent to 5% of the region’s GDP. It is also the second largest export sector in Navarre, mainly in the manufacture of wind turbines and their components.

The existing dense industrial fabric covers all links in the value chain, including a large renewable energy operator, Acciona Energía, and two large OEMs: Siemens Gamesa and Nordex-Acciona Windpower. There is also a group of SMEs that provide high added value in specific components such as blades, control systems, bearings and gearboxes.
