BSH Electrodomésticos España, Gestamp Navarra, SKF Española, Satelec, the Navarra Industry Association, Neuraptc and the Public University of Navarra (UPNA) have developed various robotics solutions capable of adapting their movement autonomously and precisely in changing environments, typical of industry. Thus, their proposals allow the robot to understand and imitate how a person solves a task in order to replicate it later. The project, called imitAI, has received a grant of 1.17 million euros from the Government of Navarre, as part of one of its calls for strategic R&D projects.
The research carried out during imitAI was based on three real cases from industry: integration of data from different sources in the management of the operation (BSH tube welding case), integration of a larger volume of data to achieve high dimensional accuracy (Gestamp’s riveting operation) and management of flexible elements (SKF’s cable collection).
In this way, the new artificial intelligence algorithms and methodologies obtained thanks to this work will be of great use, for example, in welding processes, where high precision is required in three-dimensional objects.
As reflected in our ‘Strategic Sectors’ section, the ICT sector in Navarre is made up of around 200 companies that employ 3,500 people and have a turnover of around 280 million euros, with a constant search for innovation. Its activities include the automation of production processes, followed by cybersecurity and the management of infrastructures and systems.
Despite being a relatively young sector, as the vast majority of the companies in it have been set up in the last 20 years, it has experienced significant growth due to the sophisticated demand from local and multinational companies in the renewable energy, health, food, automotive and public sectors in our region. The ICT sector has been of vital importance in the development of Smart Grids for renewable energy and in sensor networks for applications in the Agro or E-health sector.
